bha

Preservative

BHA is a synthetic preservative with carcinogenicity signals in rodent studies. What it does in pet food, and how Bowlmark scores it.

Also appears on labels as: butylated hydroxyanisole · bha (a preservative) · e320

What it is

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) is a synthetic antioxidant that keeps fats and oils from going rancid. On labels it appears as BHA, butylated hydroxyanisole, or E320. The US National Toxicology Program lists it as reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen, based on rodent studies at high doses.

Why it's in pet food

Fat preservation is genuinely necessary — rancid fat is its own health problem. BHA is the cheap, very effective option, which is why it persists in some budget formulas. Most premium brands have moved to natural preservation systems such as mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract, which do the same job.

How Bowlmark scores it

Scores are deterministic math over the printed label — the rules below apply to every product identically, and nothing estimates or fills in a blank.

Bowlmark's additive pillar deducts 35 points when BHA or BHT appears on the label — one deduction for the class, shown as a warning flag. A label carrying both takes the single class deduction, not two. The deduction applies only when the preservative is actually printed on the ingredient list; the engine never guesses at unlisted preservatives.

Common questions

Answers come from this entry and the scoring rules above — reviewed before publish, like everything else on this page. For anything about your own pet, your vet knows best.

Is BHA safe in dog food?

The US National Toxicology Program lists BHA as reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen, based on rodent studies at high doses — which is why Bowlmark deducts for it. The job it does (keeping fat from going rancid) is genuinely necessary; most premium brands now do it with natural systems such as mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract instead.

How does Bowlmark score BHA?

The additive pillar deducts 35 points when BHA or BHT appears on the label — one deduction for the class, shown as a warning flag, and a label carrying both takes the single deduction, not two. It applies only when the preservative is actually printed on the ingredient list; the engine never guesses at unlisted preservatives.

What do brands use instead of BHA?

Natural preservation systems — most commonly mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract — which do the same job of protecting fats and oils from oxidation. Most premium formulas have already made the switch.
