malted barley

Grain

Malted barley is the brewer's grain moonlighting — sprouted, enzyme-rich, kilned for flavor, and a palatability accent more than a nutrient source.

Also appears on labels as: barley malt · malted barley flour

What it is

Barley germinated and kiln-dried — malting wakes the grain's enzymes and builds toasty flavors, which is why brewing and baking prize it. In pet food it appears at accent inclusions for flavor and a craft-adjacent label note.

Why it's in pet food

Palatability and artisanal aesthetics. The enzymatic activity that matters to brewers is largely irrelevant post-extrusion; the flavor survives, the biochemistry doesn't.

How Bowlmark scores it

Scores are deterministic math over the printed label — the rules below apply to every product identically, and nothing estimates or fills in a blank.

Neutral. One boundary worth drawing: malt EXTRACT and malt SYRUP are concentrated sugars (and would keep company on the sugars list); malted barley the GRAIN is not — the engine's sugar terms don't reach it, correctly. Craft-beer branding on a dog treat is decoration either way.
