psyllium seed husk

What it is

The husk of Plantago ovata seeds, a soluble mucilage fiber that absorbs many times its weight in water into a lubricating gel. Human medicine knows it as the active fraction of bulk laxatives; veterinary practice uses the same property at food-topping doses.

Why it's in pet food

Genuine two-way stool regulation — the gel adds moisture and glide to hard stool while adding bulk and form to loose stool. In recipes it appears at small inclusions for digestive positioning; as a vet-directed supplement it's one of the few fibers with a real dosing conversation behind it.
