selenium yeast

Mineral

Selenium yeast is the organic selenium — the mineral grown into yeast protein, retained differently by the body, and the one form-vs-form debate with real evidence.

Also appears on labels as: selenium enriched yeast · selenized yeast

What it is

Yeast cultured in selenium-rich media until the mineral is built into its proteins as selenomethionine — the form selenium takes in actual food. Compared with selenite, it's absorbed and retained along amino-acid pathways, building body stores more steadily.

Why it's in pet food

A food-form selenium with genuinely documented kinetic differences — the rare premix upgrade whose literature outruns its marketing. The requirement it meets and the narrow safety window it must respect are identical to selenite's.

How Bowlmark scores it

Scores are deterministic math over the printed label — the rules below apply to every product identically, and nothing estimates or fills in a blank.

Neutral, and the aisle's closing argument: even the best-evidenced form upgrade doesn't move a score, because the engine grades what can be read from a label — patterns, disclosures, flagged substances — and mineral micrograms can't be. Selenium's home-supplementation warning applies double to the form that retains better.
