What it is
Whole wheat is the full wheat kernel — endosperm, bran, and germ — ground together. Against refined wheat flour it keeps more fiber, B vitamins, and minerals; against any other wheat term on a label, it is the version with the most of the grain intact.
Why it's in pet food
Formulators reach for it when they want wheat's energy and binding with a whole-grain story the label can honestly tell. It digests well cooked, and the fiber does modest, real work in the gut.

The engine reads wheat terms by whole word — buckwheat, an unrelated plant, no longer trips them — and whole wheat is wheat to every wheat rule: leading a DRY formula it takes the first-ingredient deduction (10 points dog, 14 cat, ingredient-quality pillar), and it counts as a wheat fraction for the splitting rule — three or more wheat-word ingredients in the top eight is a single 12-point deduction. Below the first slot, with no splitting pattern, it takes nothing.
