What it is

Whole carrots, fresh or dried. Beta-carotene is the headline: dogs convert it to vitamin A with reasonable efficiency. Cats cannot — they require preformed vitamin A from animal tissue, which is why carrot-forward "eye health" marketing aimed at cats is biology-blind.

Why it's in pet food

Affordable, sweet, colorful, and genuinely useful fiber. In kibble it's a steady mid-to-late list presence; at home a whole raw carrot is a satisfying low-calorie chew for dogs that enjoy demolition work.
