What it is
When milk becomes cheese, the casein and fat leave with the curd; the liquid whey that remains is mostly lactose with a minority of high-quality whey protein. Dried, it's a cheap, shelf-stable powder — about 70% lactose — used across baked goods and treats.
Why it's in pet food
Cost and function: dried whey sweetens gently, browns nicely, binds, and carries flavor for pennies. That's legitimate in small doses. High placement on an adult-pet treat label is where its lactose load starts to matter for sensitive stomachs.
