What it is

Whole milk, dried: milk protein, milkfat, and lactose together. The fat makes it richer and more palatable than skim powder, and correspondingly more calorie-dense. Found in treats, baked goods, and milk-replacer-style products.

Why it's in pet food

Flavor and richness — milkfat carries aroma compounds that dogs in particular find compelling. Formulators use it where indulgence is the brief; the trade is calories and the usual adult-animal lactose arithmetic.
