flounder

Fish

Flounder is the premium flatfish of limited-ingredient recipes — lean, gentle, expensive, and doing novelty work more than omega work.

Also appears on labels as: whole flounder · fresh flounder · deboned flounder

What it is

A lean flatfish, mild to the point of blandness — which is the appeal: flounder-led limited-ingredient diets bank on a protein most pets have never met, in a package sensitive stomachs rarely argue with.

Why it's in pet food

Novel-protein positioning at the premium end of the fish aisle. As with all lean whitefish: excellent protein, minimal EPA/DHA — recipes wanting the omega story add fish oil separately, and the label shows it when they do.

How Bowlmark scores it

Scores are deterministic math over the printed label — the rules below apply to every product identically, and nothing estimates or fills in a blank.

Seated since the 2026-08 matcher update — flounder-led recipes now earn the named-protein bonus the fish's precise naming always merited. Elimination-diet advice travels with all novel proteins: the flounder means little if the fat and flavor lines carry commoner fish; audit the whole label, treats included.
