pea fiber

Legume

Pea fiber is the hull fraction of peas — fiber bulk, and a pea-word the splitting rule counts. How Bowlmark scores pea fractions.

Also appears on labels as: pea fibre

What it is

Pea fiber is the fibrous hull fraction left when peas are split into protein and starch streams — mostly insoluble fiber with some soluble. It exists because fractionating peas is how grain-free manufacturing works.

Why it's in pet food

It adds stool-firming fiber cheaply, and it lets a recipe reuse a fraction the pea-protein stream already produced. Three pea fractions on one label is the pattern worth noticing — the same plant wearing three names.

How Bowlmark scores it

Scores are deterministic math over the printed label — the rules below apply to every product identically, and nothing estimates or fills in a blank.

Pea fiber counts as a pea fraction for the splitting rule: three or more pea-word ingredients (peas, pea protein, pea fiber, …) inside the top eight is a single 12-point deduction on the ingredient-quality pillar. It also counts toward the legume-rich grain-free informational flag — a zero-point FDA DCM-inquiry context note when a legume appears in the top five ingredients of a label carrying a grain-free claim.
