What it is

Vitamin B1, essential to carbohydrate metabolism and nerve function, supplemented as stable mononitrate or hydrochloride salts. It's among the most fragile nutrients in the can: heat, sulfite preservatives, and raw-fish thiaminase all destroy it — three separate roads to the same deficiency.

Why it's in pet food

Cats require substantially more thiamine than dogs, and canning losses must be over-formulated against. Thiamine deficiency in cat food is not hypothetical: it's a recurring, real recall category, presenting as neurological signs (wobbliness, neck curling) that reverse with treatment if caught.
