What it is

Retinol delivered as acetate or palmitate esters — the preformed, active vitamin. The species split this corpus keeps meeting from the vegetable side lands here: dogs convert plant beta-carotene to retinol; cats effectively cannot, and must eat the finished vitamin as carnivores always have.

Why it's in pet food

Meeting a requirement that, for cats, only animal sources or supplementation can meet. It's fat-soluble with a real excess ceiling — the historical feline cases came from all-liver diets, liver being nature's densest retinol package.
