soy protein concentrate

What it is

Soy protein concentrate is defatted soy refined to roughly 65–70% protein — between soy flour and isolate on the refinement ladder. It exists to add protein without adding much of anything else.

Why it's in pet food

It lifts the guaranteed-analysis protein at plant cost — the soy equivalent of pea protein's job in grain-free recipes. The rest of the label tells you whether it is a supplement to animal protein or a substitute for it.

Scores are deterministic math over the printed label — the rules below apply to every product identically, and nothing estimates or fills in a blank.

Soy protein concentrate counts as a soy fraction for the splitting rule (three or more soy-word ingredients in the top eight is a single 12-point deduction on the ingredient-quality pillar), and any soy term leading a DRY formula takes the first-ingredient deduction (10 points dog, 14 cat). Mid-list, alone, it moves no score.
